I've not spent half that on all the cars I've owned over the past 15 years... maybe even including maintenance.

Not me. I'm looking at $45k maaaybe $50k. What all of these people don't really mention is that a very large percentage of people who get a new 5 series lease them.

I think the whole discussion went off on a tangent. I would like if if they reviewed a few more common cars, but I also accept the fact that Jalopnik is an entertainment site with content subject to the whims of . . . well, you know, the Jalopnik staff.

I don't think a $60k car is an unreasonable review. Jalopnik has a very diverse reader demographic, there are a surprising amount of people who can afford such a car, just check out the Jalopnik reader's rides list. It's not like we're all dirty-faced, starving peasants in plebeian econoboxes. But I do agree with you in principle, it's a tad ridiculous to be always reviewing cars that are twice as expensive as the average new car price. But it's a welcome outlier every now an again.

My Malibu is the only car I've owned and it's worth roughly $3,200 according to KBB.

If anything we'd get a better data set if they reviewed more cars maybe even some that they don't like.

I think I'm with you there. Let's see. $1,500 for a 1991 Geo Prizm, then about $9,000 for a '96 Mazda 626. After that, $9,500 for a '03 Protege. The big ticket was the $10,000 I dropped for the POS Ford Focus that's my current ride. That's just a just about $30,000 for the four cars I've owned since I've been out of college. Not including the cars my wife has owned. $50K for one car? Not in my life time. I'd rather pick up 3 or 4 decent used ones so I'd have my bases covered no matter what kind of car I'd need.

Man I'm in the wrong business or something. I just can't fathom how much money I'd need to make to swing a 60k car.

Completely agree. There are quite a few of us who own <5k cars yet there are a few of us with 100k+ cars. Although those people are usually FP commenters or not high in the Oppo ranks.

Well I'm still in the penniless student zone of life so maybe someday although if I had $60K lying around, I'd spend it on a small fleet of motorcycles and keep the beater for grocery runs.

I always thought the rule was the price of your car should be half your yearly salary, so it'd have to be over 100k probably. However, that's not a completely unreasonable number, many professionals make that amount by their forties or fifties. If you really budgeted and minimized expenses you could probably swing a $50 or $60k car for less.

Could be I'm just jaded since I'm from a rich town. My high school friends are doctors' and lawyers' and professors' and engineers' kids, so maybe my perspective is a bit skewed.

My uncle has an S550, and his eldest daughter has a GLK. :(

I want an S550, such a lovely looking car with 4 doors. Depending on how it's being driven, I think if it's in sport mode it runs just a little bit rich or something because I see some fuel drip out of the exhaust. Turns me on.

Yep $2,000 for an 84 Monte Carlo, $3,000 for a 92 Grand Am, $4,500 for a 99 Jetta, 5,500 for an 04 Jetta Wagon, and ~$6,000 for an 02 GTI that I currently drive.

The Grand Am was far and away the worst mistake of my life. I put more into that car than I bought it for, 2 weeks after I bought it the heater core popped on the highway, for the rest of it's life it would overheat if I turned off the heater in the car. There was a point that both window regulator motors died in the middle of summer and while driving I would hold the door slightly ajar to vent the hot air. Which was an awful idea because those model years had both the shoulder and lapbelt connected to the door.

God, I need another beer now...

Eh, I've stopped reading Jalopnik almost altogether, Oppo has become my go to for a while. Jalop also crashes incessantly on my phone, whole Oppo and Kotaku work just fine.

I'm with you on the drinking part. Whiskey and coke at the moment, as I've had 3 tall boy Busch beers tonight. Yep, I'm a big spender on the booze.

It's possible I'm skewed in the other direction. At any rate 60k is well over the median income in the US let alone being more than half.

This review is going to be very useful for the jalop thinking about buying the d used a couple/few years from now. Depreciation will have that puppy down into the 30s by 2015 and someone will be glad to find this.

The most I've paid for a car was a new first gen Impreza back in the 90s. My current car is a 73 Fiat 124 spider that bought for $2000 and spent another $1500 making it dependable and roadworthy.
